The crowded race for an open judge's seat in Santa Clara County became slightly less crowded last week, when attorney George Cole decided not to formally declare his intent to run.
That leaves five other candidates who have turned in paperwork declaring their intentions. Veteran prosecutors Jay Boyarsky, Lane Liroff and Tim Pitsker, along with civil attorney Diane Ritchie and court commissioner Jesus ValenciaJr., have said they plan to run in the June 3 countywide election for a seat that will open up when Superior Court Judge Ray Cunningham retires at the end of the year.
If only for the gossip value, political junkies are looking forward to a face-off between Liroff and Boyarsky, both well-known deputy district attorneys who have pledged to raise and spend significant sums on their campaigns. But Cole, who said he's endorsing Valencia, would have brought an interesting twist to the race: He lives in San Mateo County, where his law office is.
State law doesn't require judges to live in the county where they serve. That's been the case since 1999, when former San Francisco legislator Quentin Kopp persuaded a court to strike down a residency requirement after he was appointed to the bench in San Mateo County.
